Solid Energy Continues to Endanger Lives

Save Happy Valley Coalition : 21st February 2007

At around 6pm this evening, Save Happy Valley Coalition members were shocked to once again hear an explosion from the ridge line just above them, within 500m of their position. "Solid Energy have issued a statement saying that they are within their rights to blast within 500m of members of the public if those people have been warned of blasting plans. However, we understand that blasting within 500m of members of the public is a breach of their mining license and therefore an illegal act." Said SHVC spokesperson Alex Winter-Billington this evening.

"We are really disturbed that Solid Energy are willing to risk peoples' health and safety in such a manner. The exclusion zone is designated 500m for good reason - within that zone there is a high risk of being hit by exploding rock! Thankfully, no-one was injured tonight. We are not willing to see any members hurt or injured, but we do want SE to know that we will not be bullied into backing down; we are committed to saving this native species and it's habitat from extinction." She commented further.
