Mining on conservation land
Alan Liefting : 14th April 2010
The National-led government announced a "stocktake" of the land covered by Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act 1991. The land listed in the Schedule is of high conservation value and it includes national parks. Environmentalists have battled for decades to have this land protected and it should not be destroyed for the sake of short term financial gain. Happy Valley is on mining lease land. Given the high conservation value of the area it should also be in Schedule 4.
